This isn't just for the Splint window border. I am seeing this too, and
I am using clearlooks as window border. Darkened colour after startup,
but after opening the appearance settings dialog it fixes it self. See
screenshots.

"If compiz is first to render window borders" should probably read: If compiz
is first to render the window border _Splint_.
I have yet to (un)confirm if this happens when loggin in with other themes.
You can also remedy this by going into Appearances and in Customisation
changing between differe
On the left is what is seen immediately after a login, i.e. incorrect rendering.
On the right is a correclty rendered window border, after having switched to
metacity and back to compiz.
