Well no I couldn't because I could not figure out how to run the script
while running from a live CD. I did run it under 8.04 and the results
should be there.

I checked drivers in Gutsy and under "lib/modules/2.6.22-14/kernal/sound" there
is:
ac97_bus.ko
sound_firmware.ko
soundcore.ko
The sound_firmware.ko is missing under Hardy

I installed 386 but it did not help.
It's a bit frustrating but I keep trying everybody's suggestions
I suspect that the driver is not being loaded but I don't know how to
tell, I.ve got a lot to learn about Linux.

If I go to preferences I get the message you see in the attachment
if I go to open volume control I get a message "no volume control and/or
drivers found"
I tried liveCD and had the same errors ( both alpha3/alpha4 )
Any other ideas ?

When you ran the Alpha4 LiveCD, did you verify all the volume controls
were unmuted. I recall if you use gnome-volume-control, got to
Edit->Preferences, enable each option. In particular I believe the
"Surround" option was muted by default and it needs to be unmuted.
Thanks.

Try using 'alsamixer' from a terminal window and make sure all sound
levels are unmuted and turned up. By default, ALSA 1.0.16 in Hardy
mutes some controls which need to be unmuted before sound can be heard.
I just tested Hardy Alpha5 LiveCD and after unmuting, sound is working
fine.
