Public bug reported: May be related to old bug https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=485734
The error appeared when system froze for 30-60 seconds (log timestamps before the freeze were earlier so I don't know the exact moment the system froze, only timestamps for the moment it automatically continue to run again). The only error message found in journalctl was this (hostname is "desktop"): 2021-06-14T15:28:59+0300 desktop pulseaudio[2472]: [alsa-sink-ALC892 Analog] alsa-util.c: snd_pcm_delay() returned a value that is exceptionally large: -377464 bytes (-2139 ms). 2021-06-14T15:28:59+0300 desktop pulseaudio[2472]: [alsa-sink-ALC892 Analog] alsa-util.c: Most likely this is a bug in the ALSA driver 'snd_hda_intel'. Note the NEGATIVE output from snd_pcm_delay() which matches the old bug https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=485734 This happened very near the same time as freeze that I reported in bug 1931871 so I don't know if this is the cause of the kernel freeze or the consequence. I also had similar error earlier in the same log where the returned value is positive and makes sense for simply having too high latency: 2021-06-14T15:27:25+0300 desktop pulseaudio[2472]: [alsa-sink-ALC892 Analog] alsa-util.c: snd_pcm_avail() returned a value that is exceptionally large: 382816 bytes (2170 ms). 2021-06-14T15:27:25+0300 desktop pulseaudio[2472]: [alsa-sink-ALC892 Analog] alsa-util.c: Most likely this is a bug in the ALSA driver 'snd_hda_intel'. Please report this issue to the ALSA developers. The 2170 ms delay is more than expected if the kernel memory management is frozen as I assume is the cause for https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-meta- hwe-5.4/+bug/1931871 ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 18.04 Package: linux-modules-5.4.0-74-lowlatency 5.4.0-74.83~18.04.1 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 5.4.0-74.83~18.04.1-lowlatency 5.4.114 Uname: Linux 5.4.0-74-lowlatency x86_64 ApportVersion: 2.20.9-0ubuntu7.24 Architecture: amd64 CurrentDesktop: MATE Date: Tue Jun 15 10:22:29 2021 Dependencies: EcryptfsInUse: Yes InstallationDate: Installed on 2019-01-05 (891 days ago) InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 18.04.1 LTS "Bionic Beaver" - Release amd64 (20180725) SourcePackage: linux-hwe-5.4 UpgradeStatus: No upgrade log present (probably fresh install) ** Affects: linux-hwe-5.4 (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: amd64 apport-bug bionic -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1931976 Title: pulseaudio overflow (cause or related to kernel freeze?)
