I am having the same issue. Only seems to happen when compiz is enabled.

same drivers and such as post above, but I am using a 7300 series card,
with a dual core proccessor.
Only happens 60% of the time for me if compiz is running. Never had a
problem without compiz running.

I can confirm this bug with the current nvidia(-glx-new) driver (169.12),
kernel 2.6.24.16 and a 7950 card (or something like this x) ). Compiz is
enabled. Oh and i run Kubuntu Hardy (the KDE3 "version") 32bit here by the way.

I believe its a problem with compiz.
I disabled compiz and I haven't had the problem since.
This only happened for me when I was running with compiz
I am using a "nVidia Corporation GeForce 8600M"

I have the same problem, when I open the conversation with compiz running this
restarts the X server. I hava a laptop with nvidia 7300 go.
