I'm having this errors too. With 8.10 as well with the packages from
jaunty installed on 8.10.
The funny thing is: If I do: perl -e 'print pack "H*",
"891e0088"' > /dev/lcd0
the lcd display shows a clock starting with 09:30 AM. So the lcd display
is working.

Probably having the same problem:
I have a soundgraph imon with VFD. IT worked very well on 7.04 and 7.10, but I
had to build the modules by myself. No I did the upgrade to hardy 8.04 today.
At first I was surprised, as the IR worked out of the box. But then later on I
noticed a high CPU load.
