I have uninstalled nautilus (purge option) and reinstalled. The issue
persists on my machine. Is there anything I can give you to help out?

I think I found out the cause, I had Ubuntu Dock enabled while having
Dash to Panel enabled. Ubuntu Dock may have been turned on during
upgrade (as I had turned it off months ago). I'll keep testing and
report back after going through a logout/login and a full reboot.

I use X11 with proprietary nvidia graphics. I will test with the other
user accoutn on this machine which has way less setting changes than my
account.

Thanks for the update, the description is a bit confusing now though.
When you wrote 'the launcher icon' you didn't talk about the dock which
is the default ubuntu configuration?

The issue happens if both Dash to Panel and Ubuntu Dock are enabled at
teh same time. Having only one of them active does not trigger the
issue.

thanks for the details, it's clear at this point that it's not a
nautilus bug so I'm going to keep that one closed, you can try to report
the extensions conflicting to the corresponding upstream though, but it
does sound somehow an user setup issue
