I also have this problem in 4.6.4 on Hardy, just after upgrading.
Along with the other bugs I've come across (help menu item doesn't work,
manual which is installed doesn't correspond to the interface, crash
when changing language or importing training text), it looks like Dasher
on Ubuntu needs s
Well, they were complaining on a few other distros (as described by them):
* Debian Lenny
* openSuSE 10.3
* gentoo (compiled with gcc 4.2.3)
Just one person told that everything is good - it was Gentoo with following
conditions:
dasher-4.6.1 USE=”-accessibility cairo -debug -gnome”
gtk+-2.10.14

The same problem still exist with packages from feisty (dasher-data and
dasher 4.4.1-0ubuntu1), however I can at least really type at all, while
on 4.6.0 even this is impossible.
Some other persons confirmed that problem exist also for 4.6.0 in Gentoo
(compiling with gcc 4.2.3) and Debian Lenny:
