Thank you msaxl and Adrian for performing the verification!
I've also verified in the build log that lto optimisation is now
missing. For example:
cc -DDEBUG_PPPD -DTRUST_PPPD_TO_DIE -O2 -fno-builtin -Wall -DSANITY
-DLINUX -I/include/ -DIP_ALLOCATION -DUSE_KERNEL -g -O2 -ffile-prefix-
map=/<>=.
Testing performed :
- Using a config verified to be working on 20.04
- Enabled -proposed
- Updated and verified that component is now version 1.3.16-1ubuntu0.1
- Connected to my corporate VPN successfully where previously I could not
- (this config also worked for the PPA version published above
Likewise confirm that the proposed package is working.

Thank you for testing the fix! I've now uploaded the fix for inclusion
in an update to 22.04. This is now awaiting SRU team review (I shouldn't
do that myself as I prepared it). Once the fix is accepted, we will ask
for testing again of the final package binary before it is published to
updates.

What I did:
apt remove xl2tpd

This is the minimal change to disable LTO, and is the fix I intend to
propose for 22.04 if it is reported to work.

"main", this should have been noticed since contrary to other software
this does 100% not work

either disabling link time optimisation or to use msaxl's patch in

For those using network-manager-l2tp, another workaround is to use
Katalix go-l2tp which is from the authors of the L2TP kernel modules
(which xl2tpd also happens to use).
With Networkmanager-l2tp >= 1.20.0, it has switched to kl2tpd as the

I tried around and it really seems to be that a default build works but
a debian version does not.
the reason is lto. in the meantime I made my ppa version of 1.3.17 that works.
(ppa:saxl/ppa)
WARNING: this is on 1.3.17. If there will be a working 1.3.16 version then it
will not be downgraded

It looks like newer xl2tpd messes up parsing tunnel which is echoed by the
server in SCCRP message.

Same "Cannot find tunnel" in syslog.
Had a working VPN connection in 21.10 with IPSEC/L2TP (PSK + username password)
setup from Settings using GUI.
Did an upgrade to 22.04 and it stopped working.
