Hi. I have a Lenovo ThinkPad X61s and for me low power consumption is
_the_ most important feature there is.
When Hardy was released I decided to do some idle discharge testing.
What I did was to install a plain Ubuntu desktop (i386), do no

Vadim I have no battery on my laptop (it wont charge, so I dont carry it with

From what I understand ACPI only reports power usage when you're on battery
power by design.

I was quite happy with battery life on my Thinkpad X60 with Gutsy.
Powertop gave me a minimum of 10.9W on an idle desktop. I've just
upgraded to Hardy and can't get below 12.9W now.

It's important to note that if you have two laptops, one running XP, one
running Ubuntu and you let them run down doing nothing. Although the XP
laptop will report a longer battery time, it in fact runs down at the
same time as the Ubuntu laptop.
I have noticed the times get closer and closer
my laptop is Dell Inspiron 6400, I have about 3:15 hours on Ubuntu while I have
about 4:00 hours on XP.
a related issue is that, the screen not always turned off when closing lid.
instead it may be black but still powered or just nothing happens.

Yes, setting some of the options powertop recommends would be an
excellent idea.
As for screen dimming, you can already set that in the preferences
(right-click on the battery). It should be set to be more aggressive
though.

Monitor applet on the top bar.
it will allow users to choose the proper cpu frequency and the consume less
power.
I set mine on the conservative profile.

hard disk spin-downs and sleep modes are really needed (to work
properly). The problem is with services and even the kernel waking up
the hd for silly things. There are things one can do to avoid them, but
these should come by default with your distro. Sensible defaults for
laptops. It should be
