After todays python update, i get this error message

'import site' failed; use -v for traceback

And after trying to compile an app that requires python, i get this:

checking for python... /usr/bin/python
checking for a version of Python >= 2.1.0... 'import site' failed; use -v for 
traceback
yes
checking for the distutils Python package... no
configure: error: cannot import Python module "distutils".
Please check your Python installation. The error was:
'import site' failed; use -v for traceback

where i have python-dev, python-disutils-extra and python-setuptools
installed


Using Ubuntu hardy
python --version:          Python 2.5.2 
dpkg -l python |cat :    python  2.5.1-1ubuntu2
