andrea, thanks for the reply, it looks like I had the acceleration on my
xorg.conf file set way to high so it was extremely sensitive to my
movement and was jumping to the edge of the screen. all is well now.

Could you please attach your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file? Can you do some actions
(for example using the keyboard) when the touchpad is freezed?
