Seems to be fixed in current intrepid. At least I can no longer
duplicate at any zoom level.

Aha Number 2. Did some more testing. If I choose View -> Zoom ->
Reset, all is well.
If I then choose replay and zoom out by holding ctrl and moving the
mouse wheel one click toward me, carat disappears.
So workaround is just to make sure default zoom level is being used in
gmail.

Aha. It works fine when composing a new email, but not when composing a
reply.
So to duplicate, just hit reply to a message and start typing -- no
carat.

I should add that it 'sometimes' works. Haven't nailed down why it
works sometimes and not others.
