We should confirm whether gnome-chess has the same stack trace (hence
comment #3). According to comment #4, the original reporter is only
confirmed to have encountered bug 1965897. So the gnome-chess issue
might be off-topic here.

gnome-chess fails to start as well, but it's crashing also on newer gen
chips (tested on Alder Lake) with the iris driver. What's common is that
it is also fine on wayland.
upstream had a look at the backtrace, but said that there's nothing that
would explain why it fails on xorg

I can reproduce on intel haswell, with the gallium based 'crocus'
driver, but not when the app is run like:
MESA_LOADER_DRIVER_OVERRIDE=i965 gnome-extensions-app
though 'libgl1-amber-dri' needs to be installed first, it ships classic
dri drivers now

I can't seem to reproduce the problem, and bug 1966443 doesn't appear to
be relevant. Please repeat the steps in comment #3...
My new theory is that the upgrade to Mesa 22 you mention in comment #5
is showing a crash in Mesa itself (which will crash GTK4 apps like
gnome-extensions-app). Because
Although it works without problems in Wayland, the problem still exists
in Xorg

It is important to note that before this problem occurred, I used "apt-
get dist-upgrade" to force some packages to be updated, and this is what
I did at the time.
