I don't know if this will help, but, for the people using Dell OptiPlex
740 with BIOS version 2.0.12, upgrade to version 2.1.6 released on
5/20/2008
My Hardy install is also up-to-date (last Friday 5/23/2008 some xorg
updates were installed). Since then , I didn't have any problems so far
with
BTW, Dell sucks a lot. They only provide BIOS installed as an EXE
windows file. So, you will need to install windows to update your BIOS.
(on wine doesn't work)...

I've also had the same issue.
It's very intermittent and can go for a few days without freezing but when it
does, it requires a hard reset.
Did a full upgrade from Gutsy (which was very stable with the same
hardware) to Hardy.

Tony
I recommend you to do a fresh install, Ive done it my self and I have
better results. Now I did not install Propietary Drivers (beacuse if I
did, I could not use Brightness control) and Im not experimenting the
freezing problem so often than before.

Hi, I just made a fresh install on my laptoc. I installed Hardy and I keep
having the same problem:
Note this:
1. The problem is only present when I power on my laptoc WITHOUT AC power
2. The computer is still alive, it works, but I cant control it, I have to
install a sshserver to reboot it
I have the same problem... 2 weeks into a fresh install of 7.10. Just 30
minutes ago it started to freeze and had to shutdown using the power
button. I'm running ubuntu on a HP Compaq nx7300.
The first 2 times I had managed to start up a rhythmbox instance, but
the 3rd time i only got a browser
Hi, I have the same problem with that, and Im not playing music while
this happends, it just happens a few minutes after turning on the
computer.
My laptoc:
HP Compaq nx6325.
Also you may note that this ONLY happends to me when Im running on
battery, I have to plug-in to avoid this issue. I
Seems to appear when i play music using audacious or rhythmbox (alsa,
i've removed pulseaudio)

Well, it looks like a touchpad problem. I can't tell if the touchpad
has crapped out, or gotten wet--any spilled drinks? Sometimes the
ribbon cable to the touchpad gets loose.
Grab yourself a USB mouse and plug that in and see if you can regain
control. Try turning off the touchpad in BIOS.
also usb mouse freeze (trust 15349)
pointer and keyboard freeze simultaneously with or without usb mouse/touchpad
with gutsy i never seen this problem with rt kernel and customized kernel
(2.6.24 compiled using kernelcheck)

Marked as Confirmed. Hardy is supposed to have a tickless kernel. I
don't know if that is having an impact with your laptop. When your
keyboard is frozen, how do you shutdown? If you have access to another
computer, install openssh-server and login via ssh so you have a remote
connection to
i've setted poweroff using power button into gnome power management

Thanks for your bug submission. When you have a new installation, there
are several databases that get created. This can take a long time.
It's possible that your machine froze because of this activity. The rt
in the kernel means real-time so it devotes less time to mouse and
keyboard
