Interestingly, the gear appears only after hibernation. I can choose
Wayland, but, once I log out everything is gone and I'm back to X11

Sane problem here Ci5 10 + nVidia GTX 1650 + driver 510.
In the login screen I can't see the gear, add line to the grub same
issue.

I just did a fresh install of the official release 22.04 LTS image
today, and hit this problem. No gear, and it defaults to X11, whether I
have just the NVIDIA GPU enabled, or both the Intel integrated GPU a

Same thing here after upgrading from 21.10 to 24.04 yesterday.
My GPU is an AMD and 21.10 defaulted to Wayland.
With 22.04 - the session is X11 and there is no "gears" icon to select
Wayland.

This also happens to me on my AMD laptop, this is why we use backups!

ran into this problem too, after the latest update i was completly unable to
even get to gdm3 login screen, as i uninstall xorg drivers a long time ago..
Had to install the back, to get back to the desktop.
