I am closing this report in agreement with the reporter. The issue is a
non-ubuntu installation of the packages that has a bug. There is no
issue of this kind known in the ubuntu package.

I don't consider it a bug either, but be aware that some other people out there
may encounter the same problem.
I could not simply remove the original mediatomb package, the only way I could
remove it was to edit /var/lib/dpkg/info/mediatomb.prerm, remove the package
then install the Ubuntu vers

I would currently not classify this as a bug. I believe this can easily
be resolved by removing your non-ubuntu mediatomb package and then
install the ubuntu package.
sudo dpkg --remove mediatomb
sudo apt-get install mediatomb
