I have had the same problem. It had something to do with the wron UDMA
mode for the DVD writer. Which has something to do with sata drivers
taking over all ide en sata devices in Hardy.
All the problems I was having I wrote in the following tread:

Hi Wouter,
If you aren't already doing so, care to test with the latest 2.6.24-12
kernel. Then assuming the issue still exists, per the kernel team's bug
policy, can you please attach the following information. Please be sure
to attach each file as a separate attachment.
* cat /proc/version_sig

Ah, it works when you first use burn:/// to compile the cd and then
start n-c-b from the command line (that cost me another dvd to find out

launching command: growisofs -dvd-compat -graft-points -path-list
/tmp/iso-wouter.BLFS7T -Z /dev/hdc -input-charset utf8 -
I first tried starting n-c-b from the command-line, that doesn't work
because it says no files selected. I then runned nautilus from the
command line and went to burn:/// to write a disc. I get this error
again:
Error writing to disc
There was an error writing to the disc:

Thank you for your bug report. Could you run gconf-editor, enable the
apps, nautilus-cd-burner, debug key, starts nautilus on a command line
and copy there the log when trying to burn something?
