I still have the same problem actually. The screensaver only works once
per session.
No errors were available in /var/log/(messages|syslog), /var/crash, or
dmesg. I suspect it's not crashing since the process is persisting. Is
there any other way I can get debug info on this?

reboot before coming to report the bug and now it seems to be working.

I don't have any /var/crash, and nothing from the terminal.
It just starts the daemon and in general it will work well the first few
times.
