down kernels (it's zero indexed !) and write index to "default" line.

kernel update is fine. turns out that vga16 and fbcon in /etc/modules
are the culprit. i had to add these modules when I was in gutsy.

Try to re-install linux-restricted-modules and the binary-driver-package
of your graphic card (if it's in use on your computer).
You can do this in aptitude with the key "L".
