I had the same problem in Jaunty beta, rt2500 chipset. Network Manager
gave me 1 Mb/s. I solved this by adding:
ifconfig wlan0 up
iwconfig wlan0 rate 54M
to /etc/rc.local, as described in
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=853942 ([SOLVED] RaLink RT2500
rev 01 - A better driver than kernel?
For me it is fixed in intrepid with nm-0.7 so i'm closing it. please
reopen if it is not fixed for someone.

I am having the same exact problem. Attached is a screenshot of the
info reported by the nm-applet. I am using a Dell Wireless 1450 Mini
PCI card with a Broadcom BCM4309 chipset. Here is the info reported by
iwconfig:
$ iwconfig

eth0 no wireless extension
I also have this problem. I have a Broadcom Corporation BCM4306

I have some more troubles with the b43 driver, see
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/199191
I think I can't reliably say anything about this bug untill that is fixed, it
might even cause this one.

I could not get ndiswrapper nor bcm43xx to work and had a hell of a time
getting b43 back working normally. The ndis/bcm43xx drivers loaded
properly and ndis said it found hardware but I just did not get a
network interface.
I attached the syslog with b43, maybe there is something useful in
there.
Yep, it's still there with nm-applet 0.6.6-0ubuntu1, i'll try
ndiswrapper later

Hi there
do you still experience this issue with the current version of the
application?, do you still see this behavior using the ndiswrapper driver?
Thanks in advance
