However, note that I cannot reproduce it anymore - my sound works fine.
In addition, do not confuse the terms -- pulseaudio is a userspace sound
layer, it is not used instead of alsa. Alsa is used anyway, PA runs on
top of it

As far as i know Kubuntu Hardy heron uses Pulseaudio instead of alsa for
sound driver. I also have the same problem as Vytas has. Only sound on
one side, and when i use the balance in the mixer program or in Amarok,
the sound disappears completly and won't come back

It somehow fixed automatically after pressing mute/unmute.
No idea how, neither reboot helped nor could I find problems in volume levels
