Quite a serious issue!
Newer Linux kernels have done some heavy architectural changes to the
sleep/hibernate code. Could you tell us if this is still an issue for
you with the latest Ubuntu version?

Yes, it was awful and costly. I still have that hardware around, and the
recent kernels work just fine -- the issue is gone. I think the fix must
have happened at some kernel update between versions, but I don't
remember when exactly. So if we don't care about old versions, this can
be closed.

Yes. Though I have had occasion now when I used sleep and there was no failure
in shutdown (and the next boot).
But that is rare. In general, if I use sleep, shutdown fails and the clock is
reset.

This problem is unchanged in the released 8.04 version.
Whenever I use sleep even once during a session, then rebooting (or poweroff)
fails.
It hangs and resets the system clock to Jan 1 2001.
