Ctrl + Alt + F1 bringing up a console (known as a VT) is the intended behavior. If Ctrl+Alt+F7 doesn't return you to your GUI session and X is indeed crashing, then I'd probably accuse the nvidia graphics driver. If you switch to nv, does X still crash? -- Ctrl + Alt + F1 restart X in Kubuntu H
