The bug here is meant to be the fact that there's no longer a way to easily specify a custom application to be launched upon DVD, audio CD and music player insertion. A separate bug should be filed about that in the upstream bug tracker if the reporter finds it necessary. The bug as it is defined

I don't think this is a bug as such just a confusing and obscure method of configuring Ubuntu. To get VLC to play DVDs by default I followed the advice given at http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=733559 #8 Step 1 is to set VLC as the default DVD player via: $ sudo gedit /ect/gnome/defaults.

The bug is really confusing, gconf is a database where keys have values, gconf-editor is a graphical editor to change those. Nothing has been removed from the Preferred Applications capplet. If you mean Removable Drives and Media, the functionality of the Media tab that has been removed is now handled by Edit / Preferences / Media in Nautilus, since Nautilus handles mounting now. The key values set and read by gconf-editor are correct. However, Gnome ignores these settings. So, either gconf-editor is not handling it properly, or another application is overriding the settings of the gconf-editor (or gnome for that matter). Of course I don't know how Ubuntu handles this in

Having exactly the same problem with Hardy Heron Alpha 6. After launching conf-editor and then navigating to the key /desktop/gnome/volume_manager/autoplay_dvd_command then setting value to vlc %m had no effect. Totem remains the default player. I think this might be because Nautilus is over riding
