I also have this issue, on a Thinkpad T60 with Intel X3100 graphics. It happens with vlc, mplayer, and some games as well. I can additionally confirm that 'xset -dpms' also exhibits this behaviour, indicating that this issue resides in X's treatment of DPMS. -- mplayer and vlc causes backlight

I've tracked this down to mplayer's disabling of DPMS while playing a movie, which means the bug is in the DPMS portion of the X server. To confirm this: a) in mplayer-1.0~rc2/config.h change #define HAVE_XDPMS 1 to #undef HAVE_XDPMS and rebuild - problem goes away (along with DPMS disabling
