ok, thanks for the link. i see that the real problem comes from
individual applications.
however, the gtk file chooser should at least be consistent with the
behaviour of nautilus, which means (at least for files ending in ~) they
should show/hide when show hidden files is checked/unchecked

Thank you for your bug report. That's not really a bug, backup files are
different of hiddens file and have no standard format, you can read
about it on http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=355851
