More information, after some input.
It appears that the 3.5.1-1 ksmbd-tools package does not install cleanly
on top of an older version, nor does the fixed 3.5.2-3. But after
removing *and purging* the existing package (Jammy), the 3.5.2-3 package
from Oracular installs cleanly and completely, wit
I installed the 3.5.2-3 ksmbd-tools from Oracular and while it installs,
it shows the same issue as Bernard saw - it expects the ksmbd.conf in
/usr/local/etc/ksmbd, instead of /etc/ksmbd.
Also, it doesn't install the sample conf file, and since the name and
some of the options have changed since J
During my tests, I did so with Debian on sid as well as Debian 12. I had
it all working fine. I an not sure what you are doing. But I should have
some time later this week trying to reproduce…

you're right, I was looking for *.deb in ~/ksmbd-tools and it was in ~/
The new installation seems to be looking for the configuration file in the
/usr/local/etc/ksmbd directory and not /etc/ksmbd like the previous one.
However, after installing and restarting the service, errors appear:

edit debian/install so it says

debuild
and install your new deb pkg

I tried to install today's version (ksmbd-tools_3.5.2-1) manually but with the
same undesirable result:
