I can confirm that manually copying the i915 firmware
from
https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/firmware/linux-firmware.git/tree/i915
to /lib/firmware/i915
regenerate initramfs and reboot.
All normal.
So upgrade broken the 915 firmware package.

tried intel, on-demand and nvidia prime mode. None works correct
Loads of firmware is missing. see nvidia.txt

Oh actually it sounds like the problem might be that hardware
acceleration isn't working:
