The meta-package installs a LOT more than just what openoffice.org-gtk
does, so no they don't operate the same way.

the meta package fixed the problem, however shouldn't openoffice.org-gtk
work the same. The way I understand it, the two packages should
function the same and the only difference should be in the look and
feel. If this is the case then there is still an issue with the error I
reported.

works. It works fine for me on Ubuntu hardy.
