There have been a number of updates to compiz + graphic drivers in the
past few weeks. I am not seing this issue anymore. Can you try this
again and report back ?

I can confirm this bug on Kubuntu 8.04 using KDE 3.5.9. I recieved the
same problem, I recieved a window deceration error then lost my window
decerations on Thunderbird. When I set desktop effects back to none I
got the Thunderbird decerations back.

Ok, so I have this same problem on this chipset (on a Thinkpad T60):
