Thanks for the feedback Rocko. Since you are the original bug reporter,
I'm marking this "Fix Released" for Intrepid.

I'm pretty sure this is fixed in the 2.6.27 kernels. 2.6.27-4 has been
resuming a few times a day without feedback for a couple of weeks now.

Just another confirmation for Hardy. One is 32-bit on an IBM Thinkpad
T42, the other is 64-bit on an Intel 945PSN with integrated Intel HDA.

I've now done two successful suspend/resume cycles without any 'whine'
from the speakers.

I've tried the latest kernels 2.6.27-2 and -3 in Intrepid, but haven't
yet been able to resume successfully either from the live CD or from an
installation.
The microphone hasn't given feedback 'whine' yet during my unsuccessful
attempts at resuming from Intrepid, but then it doesn't always do so
The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the
upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would
appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel.
There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

I tried booting into the new kernel, but unfortunately suspend was
missing from the list of options. Lots of other stuff was broken too
(for instance: intermittent USB, no wireless LAN, no CPU frequency
scaling, video resolution stuck at 800x600), so I've had to move back to
the old kernel.

Hi Rocko,
Sorry for the extremely delayed response. Just to see if it makes a
difference, care to test the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 kernel? It was
most recently rebased with the upstream 2.6.25 kernel and is currently
available in the following PPA:
https://edge.launchpad.net/~kernel-ppa/+arc
This occurs both on a Dell 8600 using 32-bit Hardy and on a Dell 1530
using 64-bit Hardy.

It's doing it again regularly. It 'beeps' rapidly for around a second,
but it sounds exactly like microphone feedback. Attached is the
information requested, including dmesg after a suspend-resume cycle.

Hi Rocko,
Per the kernel team's bug policy, can you please attach the following
information. Please be sure to attach each file as a separate
attachment.
* cat /proc/version_signature > version.log
* dmesg > dmesg.log
* sudo lspci -vvnn > lspci-vvnn.log
It would also be good to wait to capture
