Title:
gnome-compiz-preferences type mismatch
Well on this reboot I seem to be fine; one thing I did was I found
/desktop/gnome/applications/window_manager/current was set to compiz and
I've changed it to /usr/bin/metacity - so I suspect that might be the
fix. That entry is marked as deprecated and I wonder if something still
reads it
If your problem is like mine, i.e. that the settings don't get saved, so
you have to turn it off manually at each logon, there is a workaround.
Start gnome-appearance-properties from terminal, and set Visual Effects
to off. You won't have to worry about compiz anymore :)

OK, so I think there may be a few separate things going on here.
First, I think gnome-compiz-preferences is actually not in intrepid -
the package search shows it being in feisty and gutsy but then
disappeared. I think the GL desktop options are now in Appearance
Preferences 'Visual effects'.
Same problem on Intrepid 32bit on acer travelmate 4230 launching compiz
on terminal and selecting dodge effect in focus animation.
Error: Animation settings mismatch in Animation Selection list for
Focus event.

Confirmed on Intrepid. The workaround did not work for me. Somehow any
changes regarding the compiz-no compiz question gets discarded at
logout. I have to turn off compiz every time I log in. I just don't know
which variable is string instead of list. Is there a way to find it out?
Debug package,
Yes, that workaround worked for me too.

Confirmed here as well. However, a temporary workaround that seemed to
work for me was to change the mouse gestures to the - options for each
corner of the screen in GL Desktop's Desktop tab. After doing so, I no
longer get an error popup about lists vs strings as in the original
post.
Is this
I can confirm this: have just updated to current patches to Hardy Heron.
Selecting System - Preferences - GL Desktop from the menu (which seems
to be exactly compiz-gnome-preferences) behaves exactly as described in
the original report.
I have previously seen strange behaviour of the workspace
Confirming the bug. The first step is to fix the error message. It
should list the name of the configuration item that is suffering from
the mismatch.

I think this is related to workspace settings.
When gnome-compiz-preferences is started and that error is popped, the number
of workspaces on desktop becomes 1, which is also very annoying.
