Thanks for the reply Daniel, changing the settings in the fonts tab
affects every program but it doesn't seem to have any effect in firefox.

Thanks for the report. This looks like a font hinting problem. Is the
problem corrected if you change the font smoothing or hinting settings
in System->Preference->Appearance , Fonts tab, Details button? Also,
are you sure that the same font is rendered properly in programs other
than Firefox?
