I haven't seen this problem in ages, so I assume it's been already
fixed. (I run 8.10 now).

I just realized that this _might_ be relevant: I've made my
/etc/resolv.conf file unwritable by doing chattr +i
/etc/resolv.conf. (I did this to avoid an unrelated problem: my DHCP
server is sorta on drugs, and always tells my Ubuntu machine to use a
bogus DNS server ... it's a long story ...)
