I've compiled and installed Pidgin from source (checked out from their
monotone repository), and it's rock solid since.
There's a very handy guide on ubuntuforums, if needed.
I suspect this to be a bug arising from slightly incompatible shared
libraries and/or pidgin components.

i also just got this bug. i was just talking to peeps, then on the convo
window the tabs disappeared. the window title updated, but inside the
window was static. all window pop ups are blank. literally. just a blank
little window. contacts window also was static.
