This has been partially fixed for some time now. File-roller does not
ask for password but instead says it can't find other files of the
multi-part archive. See bug #386795
As of file-roller 2.27.2 this bug is completely solved. Extracting
multi-part rar archive over Samba works fine in karmic wit
Could you try if that's still an issue in jaunty?

yes, same problem with samba on 8.10
-but it works with non-free RAR.
many programs work poorly with smb:// , as I see it, ubuntu should
automatically mount smb:// shares to local file system, allowing
programs to operate as-if the files were local.

Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been
any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue
for you? Could you try to reproduce the same with Ubuntu 8.10 or 9.04?

Note that this may be a more general problem (see bug 44958) in that
file-roller doesn't support anything but RAR v1 archives. On my system,
I get the password prompt regardless of the location of the rar files
(remote or local) when trying to extract newer RAR archives.
