In my comment of 17 April ( https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source /linux-restricted-modules-2.6.24/+bug/214165/comments/5 ) I noted that I'd fixed this problem by shutting down X and turning off the monitor power, then turning it back on again. This problem has never re-occurred since then. M

Hi psmith-gnu, Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu?

OK weird. After lots of playing around/rebooting/messing with mode lines in xorg.conf/etc. I solved it. I solved it by bringing down X (sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop), then TURNING OFF the monitor's power, then turning on the monitor, then starting X again. After I did that, xrandr was able to see m
