I'd fixed this problem by shutting down X and turning off the monitor
power, then turning it back on again.
This problem has never re-occurred since then.

i had similar problems,
it might be unrelated but for me
putting the HorizSync and VertRefresh
in the xorg.conf file seemed to force
more resolution choices to be accepted.
ie:
Section "Monitor"
HorizSync 30.0 - 110.0
VertRefresh 50.0 - 150.0
EndSection

OK weird. After lots of playing around/rebooting/messing with mode
lines in xorg.conf/etc. I solved it.
I solved it by bringing down X (sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop), then TURNING
OFF the monitor's power, then turning on the monitor,then starting X
again. After I did that, xrandr was able to see m
I just upgraded to the very latest hardy packages and I still see this
problem. It's very annoying and hard on my eyes since my LCD is running
at non-native resolutions.
Is there anything more I can do to work around this, or help you debug
it, or ... anything? I'm very willing to help! The cra

Here you go. Unfortunately, it only saves the last two copies of
Xorg.0.log so I don't have a copy of the one that worked earlier today
:-/. Seems like this is not so good; why do we only save two copies?
