I would like to re-open this task for mplayer, since ffmpeg is now in main. It could be a good idea to provide a version of mplayer in universe so we can ship it on a Live-CD. For now, there is 3 problematic build-depends (which are in multiverse) : - libfaac-dev (see also bug #374900) -

I'm confirming this to the archive admins. Please note that there is a plethora of package in multiverse which are depending or related to mplayer. Most of them (if not all) are in multiverse since they depend on mplayer, therefore if we follow debian these should also be changed to universe:

According to the mplayer maintainer we unfortunately have to keep mplayer in multiverse. Apparently Debian disables all encoding, so they can get away with it in main. We don't want to do that, so we will keep the patent encumbered encodings and the package in multiverse. ** Changed in: mplayer
