I've got the same problem, with the same wireless card. The workaround
(sudo iwconfig wlan0 rate 54M) does work, but that's just a workaround,
not a fix.

I've got the same problem with: Network controller: RaLink RT2500 802.11g
Cardbus/mini-PCI (rev 01). I tried
$ sudo iwconfig ra0 rate 54M
but got an error saying SET failed on device ra0 ; No such device.

and then shut off my wireless
and then turned it back on
so probably the /etc/network/interfaces modification suggested in the
post will work (as a workaround, I guess).

I'm trying that at the moment, it makes the connection work better, but the
range of the signal is still very limited.
I invested another few hours today, trying either to compile the serialmonkey
driver, which kinda worked after a small fix, but didn't get a connection. I

I have the same problem on a laptop with a Ralink Chip that uses rt2500pci.
Connection is limited to 1 Mb/s, is slow and the signalstrength is weak.
This is with the driver from the 2.6.24-17-generic Kernel.
