I think it's more of an informational message; letting you know that the
device hasn't finished initializing(?) yet. Ignore it and it will
complete the boot process.

We’ve been discussing a replacement for usplash for lucid that would
handle multiple clients simultaneously waiting for input and displaying
progress, with the user being able to switch focus between the fields.
That would fix a lot of issues we currently have, including the CLEAR
After upgrading Jaunty to Karmic, I also am getting

Press ESC to enter a recovery shell
It then proceeds normally

Like Nicolo commented, there is now a lot of flickering during fsck. To
the point that I would prefer the original bug :) Can fsck (mountall?)
be fixed to not issue CLEAR all the time?

I'd assume that it is related to full-disk encryption (LUKS) or LVM,
which I have both in use on my system.

I have the same problem (for a week already). It's not related to LUKS
or LVM as I am not using them. Maybe it has something to do with the fix
for Bug #458389.

I am still getting these messages on boot although all my disks
eventually mount correctly. It usually displays the error 1 to 3 times.
