Confirmed here as well. I fixed it by booting from a gentoo livecd
removing 'append="quiet splash"' and following the yaboot installation
instructions on the gentoo site.

That should have been: make sure that yaboot is NOT installed with the
line 'append="quiet splash"' in /etc/yaboot.conf.

I managed to install hardy PowerPC from the 20080420 alternate cd bug
was bitten by this bug on the installed system. I could not boot - not
even with video=ofonly. This is a showstopper!
A work-around is to make sure that yaboot is installed with the line
'append="quiet splash"' in /etc/yaboot.co
After further investigation I have found that the ticking noise is not
from the cdrom drive but from the monitor. I seems like it is switching
between modes all the time or going in and out of power-save mode. The
screen is black with no flicker.
