Another observation: After installation from a desktop CD booted with
live-nosplash the the installed system boots without problems. It seems
the problem with the splash screen is only on the desktop CD.

The same or similar here. LED of power button pulses vaguely with vague
pulsing or clicking noise. Slot-loading G3 with FireWire.
Kubuntu live CD does the same.
(In my case the alternate CDs don't work either, always fail at some
point in the installation routine, despite the media passing checks
