shows version 1.4.18-1ubuntu2 for Jaunty.
Anyway, thanks to volunteer maintainers, 1.4.22b version of the package

I too found this "feature" very confusing. For the last month and a
half, I thought it was a bug which was causing Liferea to forget which
items I'd read. I didn't figure out what was going on until I found
this bug report.
