I've had the same error, but making some tests I've found that with just enabling the PAE option and the VT extensions option (even if you don't have them) on the VM settings solves this. I don't quite understand why is this behaviour... but it works for me. -- VirtualBox - Can't install hardy

I installed Hardy i386 using the alternative ISO into Parallels and that worked. I was able to get the Ubunutu server install to boot by going into a shell (alt-F2) at the end of the install and 'chroot /target bash' and apt-get linux-image-generic and removing the server kernel. --
