Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

Hardy and Gutsy
I can connect (WPA) at home but whenever I try anywhere else on a public
hotspot I cannot get a network connection even though NM appears to be working
correctly ( I can see networks) but no internet. If I try to ping I get
"No network connection".
I've tried dhclient wlan0 but that doesn't help. I've compared what I get for
IPs and DNS, etc with what I get when I use Windows on this same laptop and all
is the same.
I've found several forum threads about this but no one seems to have solved it
except to say try WICD.
ONe thread suggested WPA_supplicant .conf might need an entry for "other"
networks but Hardy doesn't seem to use
WPA_supplicant.conf so couldn't try that.

** Affects: network-manager (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: New
