As per my comment above, this problem disappeared for me when I switched
from Kubuntu to Ubuntu, so you can probably close the bug, since there
is now no one who can reproduce it.

By the way, I just noticed the the bug description has a typo - it
should be (K?)NetworkManager of course. Actually the ? can be removed
too now.

This definitely seems to be KNetworkManager-related. I have just
switched to Ubuntu without the K (i.e. installed ubuntu-desktop and
removed the kubuntu bits) and it works fine now.
Since there is apparantly now no one who can reproduce this bug, you
might as well close it until someone else sees
