Unfortunately the answer is yes. I thought it was fixed but just 5
minutes ago I tried to restart my machine and the same problem happened
again.

Solved the problem on my machine. Seems the problem was caused by installing
the Keytouch application .

After a restart
I need to take my previous comment back. The latest updates did *not*

Same problem here. Selecting shutdown or restart will cause all panels
and icons to disappear leaving only the wallpaper on the desktop and
then it just stops there till I kill X. Sytem shuts down normally if
shut by teminal command .
