Please test out the packages that are available in the hardy-proposed
repository. The fix has been uploaded we just need at least one more
person to report a positive test then we can move the package into
hardy-updates.

Please fix this potentially simple dependency issue, I rely on rmagick
for services. I can also go through the fix as provided by anitpode,
however the reason I use ubuntu is so that I won't have to install
packages by hand.

Can't install librmagick-ruby1.
The following quick-fix seems to work for me on a fresh install of i386
Hardy Desktop.
I have the following "magick" components which were installed in the
usual way. The key one that really helped was libmagick9-dev.
aptitude search -F "%p (%v) %d" '~i' | grep magick
imagemagick
SRU ack'd. Normally the version would be 1.15.11-1ubuntu0.1 but I don't
think that's critical in this situation.

Attached is a proposed patch for this package based on Lucas's comments,
which lets librmagick-ruby build again, fixing the uninstallability
problem in hardy.
No changes are needed for intrepid, which should automatically pick up
the fix from Debian when autosyncing is turned on.

For some reason, generating this example fails with this version of
libmagick. (newer upstream versions work).
The easiest fix is to disable the patch fail-on-doc-failure.dpatch (the
patch makes the build fail if an example fails).

librmagick-ruby also fails to build on hardy, so a simple rebuild is
insufficient to fix this problem. Here's the tail end of the build log:
/usr/bin/ruby1.8 -I /home/devel/canonical/NBS/librmagick-ruby-1.15.11/./lib -I

The problem is that imagemagick was updated, and now generates a
libmagick10 binary package. But librmagick-ruby wasn't rebuilt after
that change, so it still depends on libmagick9. It just needs to be
rebuilt. ("oxine" seems to be in the same case).
As a user, you can probably just get the librma

This is also a problem on the x86 version of desktop. For some reason
