Ok, confirming then -- but I'm not sure what the cause of the problem is
if it's not a library missing from ia32-libs. Are we sure they're all
available? Could you try a quick ldd of the skype binary again?

I am running 64bit Ubuntu 8.10 with skype and ia32-libs version
2.2ubuntu18 and I also have issues that no images (jpgs) are being
displayed in Skype.

so ia32-libs needs libqt4-core, libqt4-gui, libqt4-qt3support (really
needed?), libqt4-sql (really needed?). plus dependencies on libs not yet
in ia32-libs. please could somebody come up with a list of those?

Qt4 does not
Skype really depends on libraries only in libqt4-core and libqt4-gui
(which are already included in ia32-libs). See the example ldd output on
dynamic Skype executable with ia32-libs installed:
