Setting this to Fix Released based on the decision to stick with the
2.6.27 kernel for Intrepid - https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/kernel-

CONFIG_VIRTUAL_MMAP=y is a PS3 killer
This bug affects the PS3 which is powerpc based so it uses the ubuntu-
intrepid-ports kernel. It looks like the ports kernel will remain on
2.6.25 for intrepid. The real fix for this bug will come from LP #220524
where we hope to get Ben H's patch into the ports source.

appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel.
There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

Ben I've raised what I think is a duplicate bug to this but with a
different solution identified. I've ended up with YOUR patch for the
VMEMMAP problem as it's solution:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-ps3-port/+bug/220524
Maybe we should have a chat about how this should really be solved.

Yes, I wrote that patch after I filed this bug report :-) I decided to
dig a bit more into the problem and found that we needed a proper long
term solution, not only on PS3 but on anything with a small memory
footprint in fact (in theory, the same problem would happen with POWER5
or 6 partitions
